Our Medical Providers

Juan A. Silva M.D.

Dr. Silva was born and raised in Boyle Heights. He graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School, enjoyed playing football and was class president his senior year. He attended UC Riverside and received his Bachelor of Science degree in 1992. He went on to UC Davis medical school, receiving his MD degree in 1998. Dr. Silva completed his internship and residency program at White Memorial Medical Center and Family Care Specialists group. He is currently a hospitalist at White Memorial Medical Center and at Monterey Park Hospital in addition to his private practice here at Mosaic Family Care. It was always his dream to start a clinic here in his own home town, and in 2001, alongside Dr. Lisa Ma, his dream was finially realized. 

Lisa Ma, M.D.

Dr Ma graduated with honors from the University of California, Riverside; earned her Medical Degree at Loma Linda University, School of Medicine; and completed her Family Medicine residency at (nearby) White Memorial Medical Center. Born in Cincinnati, Ohio, Dr Ma comes from a diverse cultural background and speaks fluent English, medical Spanish, basic Japanese and Chinese. In addition to her training in traditional medicine, Dr. Ma has also pursued furthering education in natural remedies and has developed a unique holistic skill set with a focus in integrative care. She is far from your average physician and believes she was placed on this earth to help others. In this pursuit, Dr. Ma organizes yearly aid trips to Mexico which include medical, dental, and construction assistance to under-served communities.  

Hector Castillo, M.D.

Dr. Hector Castillo is Board Certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.  He graduated from Occidental College where he received a Bachelor of Arts in Biology.  He graduated from Keck School of Medicine at USC.

He has been in practice for 14 years.

He is currently a primary care physician and a hospitalist.  Dr. Castillo serves on multiple clinical leadership committees at White Memorial Medical Center and at AltaMed Health Services.  He is a proud husband and father of three wonderful children.  He coaches flag football and enjoys time with his family.

Kirstiema Cowan, DNP

 Dr. Cowan (DNP) was born in California and raised by her Thai mother who served as an RN in charge of a community hospital. Dr. Cowan’s mother was a “hero” in her eyes. She watched her mother integrate herbs, vitamins and natural remedies with traditional medical treatments to better balance the body and treat diseases for the patients she worked with and treated. Dr. Cowan learned and embraced this holistic model from her “hero” and wanted to create this same model as she developed her own practice moving forward.  Dr. Cowan has a solid background in both conventional medicine and integrative medicine, making it easy for her to practice both areas optimally and provide the best approach for her patients. Dr. Cowan attended Frontier Nursing University earning her Doctorate of Nursing Practice. She completed her residency with Mosaic Family Clinic and soon after joined the practice.  

Erika Ruiz, PA-C

 Erika Ruiz, PA-C was born and raised in Los Angeles. She completed her undergraduate education at USC, go Trojans!, and went to USC Keck Medical School for the physician assistant program from 2008-2011. Erika met Dr. Silva during her last rotation of school and was offered a full time position at Mosaic Family Care Medical Group upon graduation in 2011. She board certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants and fluent in English and Spanish. She is a mother of two and now works part time, 4 days per week, at Mosaic. In her free time, Erika enjoys yoga and long distance running. She looks forward to providing excellent medical care to Mosaic Family patients.  

James Miyazaki, FNP

James was born in So Cal, raised in Boyle Heights and the San Gabriel Valley.  He has 25+ years of experience as an RN, 7+ years as a Nurse Practitioner.  He has graduated from CSULA 2009 with an MSN, Family Nurse Practitioner focus, ANCC certified. His FNP experience includes Urgent Care, Family Practice, and Pediatrics. He enjoys working with children and their families.  His pattion includes mountain biking, trail running, volunteering, video games, and exploring California.

We provide contracted services for small or large corporations to ensure public health compliance. Our services include but are not limited to Tuberculosis Screening, chest X-rays and vaccinations.

Currently serves as the Mental Health Director at the Student Health Center.  Specializing in the use of art therapy in cultural and cross-cultural contexts.  Expertise in assessment of trauma, depressive and anxiety disorders as well as couples/marriage counseling, trauma informed care, infant and early childhood mental health.  Experience facilitating the following therapy groups:  CARES Single Parent support group , LGBTQ support group, Stress management Group.

Larry Fernandez, LCSW

Larry is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and has worked in the field specializing in mental health, addiction services, and community counseling for the past 18 years.

 Larry began his academic career as a student at East Los Angeles College in 1994 and later transferred to obtain his Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work at California State University Los Angeles.  He then obtained a Master’s Degree in Social Work at California State University Long Beach with an emphasis on Children Youth & Families.  

Joselyn Geaga-Rosenthal LCSW


Over 40 years of providing individual, family, and group psychotherapy. Published author of articles in the mental health field.  Faculty lecturer at Cal State LA Dept. of Social Work.  Currently facilitates the Anger Management Group.  Her volunteer community work has earned her numerous awards and recognition such as Pioneer Women Award (2005) from the Los Angeles City Women's Commission, 100 Most Influential Filipina Woman in the USA (2009) and Global 100 (2013).

John Raasch, L.C.S.W.

John Raasch is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) with over 20 years of experience. He has worked with children and families in both private and public agency settings, including foster care, adoptions, and a shelter home for abused children and heir mothers. He teaches a field seminar class in the MSW program at California State University Long Beach (CSULB).

John has specialized training in trauma-focused and creative (art, drama and narrative) therapies.

Irma Marmolejo

Irma is registered as a Marriage and Family Therapist Intern, and is certified as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor. Her education and domestic and international experience of ten years has given her creditability to specialize in the following areas: Family, marriage and individual relationship restoration, and reunification, cultural issues, trauma and stress disorders, substance and alcohol disorders, and acculturation disorders. 

She has supervised in-patient youth and adult substance abuse, and trauma victim programs with children, adults and families. She Graduated from Azusa Pacific University with a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology, emphasizing in Marriage and Family Therapy.

Jermaine Strickland

Jermaine is a registered Marriage and Family Therapist Intern and has worked in the field specializing in sports psychology, mental health, addiction services, and human diversity for the past 15 years. 

Currently, Jermaine serves as the Family and Community Services Administrator for SHIELDS for Families, located in South Los Angeles.  He has worked as an Adjunct Professor of Psychology at East Los Angeles College for 4 years working in the Addictions Studies program. His areas of focus as a Professor include human diversity, co-occurring treatment, trauma, and community organizing. 

Jermaine began his academic career as a student at California State University, Long Beach on a Track and Field scholarship, obtaining his Bachelor’s Degree in Sports Psychology.  He then obtained a Master’s Degree in Educational Psychology at CSULB with the emphasis in Marriage and Family Therapy.

LA Southwest College

Student Health Center at LASC

A variety of services are available in the Student Health Center located in Student Services Building, Room 115.   Student Mental Health Services provides free individual counseling to address academic, emotional, developmental, social, relationship or other personal issues.  Counseling services are offered on a short term basis and designed to help students successfully accomplish academic goals.

West LA College

Student Health & Wellness Center at WLAC

The WLAC Student Health & Wellness Center is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for all students attending the college. The Center provides FREE & LOW COST health care services to all currently enrolled WLAC students. It is primarily supported by the Student Health Fee. Students must show a WLAC photo ID and proof of enrollment to receive services.  All medical and mental health services are provided by a Medical Provider or a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist.
